The BC Flying Squad Against Transphobia
The BC Flying Squad Against Transphobia
BCFS was born of an emergency resolution at the 2023 CLC convention in Montreal to "Reactivate Labour's Flying Squads to stand against the rising tide of transphobia & hate against 2SLGBTQIA+ people." Flying Squads themselves have a rich history in the International Labour Movement: Originally the name for a UK special police task force, activists reclaimed the term to create fast-response teams made up of multiple union affiliate members to support strike lines and communities targeted by big corporations and government meddling. No one group is "The" Flying Squads: We all do our best to honour the FS activist roots by providing on-call and ongoing support to the communities we live and work in
The BCFS is Composed of Direct Action Regional Teams across BC who are supported by Training, Legal, and Digital teams with their own base of volunteers. We are all volunteers dedicated to flowing skills, knowledge, and resources downwards and outwards throughout our communities. While we are all individual members of the various affiliate unions of the BC Federation of Labour, we are a separate coalition of activists. This enables us to prioritize action and accountability directly to the coalition partners leading the way. We do not "do for," we support from within.
We build relationships with likeminded groups and organizations to serve the communities we live and work in. This includes but is not limited to: regional pride & 2SLGBTQIA+ Organizations, supportive businesses, groups, and clubs that share our values on decolonizing and intersectionally equitable community organizing. Our goal is to show up for our neighbours and build safety for our kin by bringing folks together.
